“The Great Gatsby” is a staple of high school literature, and many people feel the need to pretend they are more well-read than they actually are. One guy tried to make a joke about the book, claiming that everyone has read it and it’s nothing special.
His bluff was called when a commenter quoted what is famously the first line of the novel. The original poster didn’t recognize the quote at all, forcing him to admit that he had actually never bothered to read the book he was mocking.
