Myth: Small Cars Are Inherently More Efficient
It seems like simple physics: a lighter car requires less energy to move, so a small car must be the most fuel-efficient choice. Historically, this was a safe bet. However, modern engineering has blurred these lines significantly. Advancements in turbocharging, aerodynamics, and transmission tech mean that a modern mid-sized SUV can often achieve better gas mileage than a small economy car from a decade ago.
Furthermore, the rise of hybrid technology has changed the game entirely. A large hybrid truck or SUV can frequently outperform a small, non-hybrid sedan in city driving. While weight still plays a role, the “smaller is always better” rule no longer applies across the board in the modern automotive market.
