Myth: Gas is Denser and Better in the Morning

This myth suggests that because liquids expand in the heat, you should fill your tank in the cool morning air to get “more” gasoline for your money. While the physics of thermal expansion is real, it doesn’t apply to gas stations. Fuel is stored in massive, insulated tanks deep underground where the temperature remains nearly constant 24 hours a day.

By the time the gas travels up the pump and into your car, the temperature difference between 6:00 AM and 2:00 PM is negligible. Even if the gas did warm up slightly, you’d be saving less than a few pennies on a full tank. It’s definitely not worth waking up early or changing your schedule for.
