12. Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

The axolotl is a critically endangered salamander with a wide smile, feathery external gills that look like pink antlers, and the ability to stay in its larval form forever. Native only to a few lakes near Mexico City, it has a smooth, mottled body and tiny limbs that give it a perpetual “baby” appearance.
Its regenerative superpower leaves scientists and parents over 35 speechless. An axolotl can regrow entire limbs, spinal cord, heart tissue, and even parts of its brain without scarring. It can do this repeatedly throughout its life. Researchers study it hoping to unlock human healing secrets. While kids find it cute, adults are stunned to learn this smiling “Peter Pan” of the amphibian world can essentially rebuild itself—something our own aging bodies can only dream of.
