10. Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)

The okapi is a shy forest dweller that looks like a zebra-giraffe hybrid: rich chestnut body, striped white-and-black legs, and a long neck and tongue. Found only in the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it was unknown to Western science until 1901.
Despite its zebra-like stripes, it’s actually the giraffe’s closest living relative. Its 18-inch tongue can strip leaves from thorny branches, and those stripes help camouflage it in dappled forest light. Adults over 40 who thought they knew every African animal are stunned to discover this “forest giraffe” remained hidden for so long—another reminder that even in our modern world, nature still keeps extraordinary secrets from grown-ups and kids alike.
