34. Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus)

The peacock mantis shrimp is a flashy crustacean with rainbow-colored exoskeleton and two club-like appendages that strike with unbelievable speed. It lives in coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, usually hiding in burrows.
Its punch is the real jaw-dropper for adults over 35. The shrimp can accelerate its clubs to the speed of a .22 caliber bullet, creating cavitation bubbles that reach the temperature of the sun and deliver a second shockwave. The strike can shatter crab shells or aquarium glass. While kids love the colors, grown-ups are speechless at this tiny “pistol shrimp on steroids” that packs the power of a bullet underwater.
