24. Tufted Deer (Elaphodus cephalophus)

The tufted deer is a small, shy deer from the mountains of central China, with a dark coat, a tuft of black hair on its forehead, and—most shockingly—long, fang-like canine teeth protruding from its upper jaw. Males use them in fights.
Those vampire fangs stun adults who grew up thinking deer were gentle vegetarians. The tufted deer is one of the few deer species with prominent tusks, which it uses to defend territory or attract mates. It barks like a dog when alarmed and can leap through dense forest undergrowth with surprising agility. Rarely seen even by locals, this “fanged Bambi” reminds readers that evolution still produces surprises in remote mountains—creatures that look photoshopped but are very much alive and armed.
