19. Sea Pig (Scotoplanes globosa)

The sea pig is a translucent, pinkish deep-sea cucumber with a plump, pig-like body, stubby leg-like tube feet, and a snout that roots through the mud. It lives in the abyssal plains 3,000 to 16,000 feet below the ocean surface.
Its alien lifestyle shocks even seasoned divers and nature enthusiasts. These “pigs of the sea” vacuum up organic detritus from the ocean floor and can move in herds of hundreds, leaving trails like tiny pink vacuum cleaners. They have no eyes but sense the world through touch and chemicals. In an environment where food is scarce, they thrive where nothing else can—proof that the deepest ocean is home to creatures stranger than any sci-fi movie.
